Some Healthy Heart Tips

By Dr. Bill

The temperature's in the 70's right now, which is right around what native Floridians call "cool weather". Of course this would be a monstrous heat wave in Long Island, where I've spent most of my life.

A chef friend of mine once said to me, "If you want heat, work in a kitchen. If you really want heat, work in a really busy kitchen."

He wasn't kidding. I had the pleasure of walking by a broiler one day, and I can't fathom how these guys do it. That broiler ran at 800 degrees, which is exactly how they can churn out dozens of steaks per night. Too warm for me.

Moving along to health and fitness, here is your heart advice for the afternoon.

1. Heart attacks don't just happen when you're 65 or older - not that I'm considering that to be old, lately. In fact the demographic is getting younger and younger. Women aren't safe either - breast cancer has now taken second place to heart disease for the most common cause of death.

2. Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially in bright colors, have anti-oxidants that are great for your heart. Raw is best, and a juicer can be very helpful.

3. If you're experiencing some impotence, or E.D., and you're over the age of 35, it could be a sign of artery blockages. Have it checked out by a cardiologist as soon as you can. You don't have to wait for your annual physical.

One of the greatest things you can do for your heart is to start taking pharmaceutical grade fish oil. There are even some signs that doctors here and there are starting to get the message.

The National Institute For Health and Clinical Excellence now advises doctors to provide fish oil for patients that have suffered heart attacks. The Institute believes that if doctors follow their advice, their patients will be at lower risk of suffering further heart attacks.

I completely agree with that, but it's useless for preventing cardiac events.

The benefits of enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil are numerous, and are great for people of all ages. I was just reading about a professional baseball player who started taking fish oil for his aching joints. As a result, he's returning to the game much sooner than expected.

In the Institute study I mentioned earlier, omega-3 fatty acids cut the incidence of recurring sudden death by heart attack 45%.

Which is why I don't wait to recommend fish oil. I always say, start now.
